Stress can be a major health issue for the millions of Americans it affects. When you are stressed your body is keyed into your sympathetic nervous system or the “fight or flight syndrome.” Your adrenals are pumping, your breathing is shallow, heart beat is rapid, and digestion is incomplete. On the psychological level it can manifest as:
- Poor memory
- Irritability and moodiness
- Difficulty relaxing
- Feeling overwhelmed
- Negative thinking
- Anxiety or panic attacks
- Sleeping problems
How Acupuncture Helps Relieve Stress
At Longevity Acupuncture we use acupuncture to reinstate balance.
Acupuncture can relieve the physical symptoms of stress that tend to accumulate in your body – in the neck, shoulders, back, etc. – causing pain and tension.
Moreover, acupuncture works to alleviate stress by releasing natural pain-killing chemicals in the brain, called endorphins. In addition, acupuncture improves circulation of blood throughout the body, which oxygenates the tissues and cycles out cortisol and other waste chemicals. The calming nature of acupuncture also decreases heart rate, lowers blood pressure and relaxes the muscles.
Acupuncture treatments for stress and anxiety can:
- Improve circulation
- Oxygenate and cleanse the tissues and blood
- Decrease heart rate
- Lower blood pressure
- Relax the muscles
- Help reduce insomnia, depression and anxiety
- Release powerful endorphins to help the body to respond to physical and emotional pain.
Studies Show It Works
Last year, researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center found that acupuncture reduces the levels of a protein-like substance in rats linked to chronic stress. If replicated in humans, Georgetown confirmed, acupuncture can offer a therapy for stress, which is often difficult to treat.
“It has long been thought that acupuncture can reduce stress, but this is the first study to show molecular proof of this benefit,” said the study’s lead author, Ladan Eshevari, Ph.D., an assistant professor.
Furthermore, researcher Shu-Ming Wang, MD, at the Yale University School of Medicine, presented study findings at the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists in 2003 that looked at how a parent’s anxiety spikes when their child is going into surgery. Wang cited a study that showed how acupuncture needles – carefully placed around the parent’s ear – can decrease their anxiety. When parents are less anxious, there’s less anxiety in children, experts say.
Auricular or ear acupuncture has long been known to relieve stress and anxiety. Until Wang’s study, however, it was not known that needles placed around the ear were so effective in relieving parental anxiety associated with a child’s surgery, a constant and very real concern for doctors.
