Low Back Pain/Sciatica

As humans, we can feel an array of pain – physically and mentally. But when it comes to health issues with your back, pain takes on a whole new meaning.

At Longevity Acupuncture, we treat lower back pain resulting from strains (muscle tears) , back sprains (overstretched ligaments) , herniated disks, and sciatica (the term for the pain that results from irritation of the sciatic nerve).   Sciatica pain can extend from your back through your buttocks and down your leg.

How It Works

Using acupuncture to treat lower back pain and sciatica, works by stimulating the nervous system and allowing for the body to regain balance, improve blood circulation and relax muscles allowing more fluid and nutrients to nourish your back.  Acupuncture can help in reducing the discomfort of disc protrusions and thus reduce and eliminate lower back pain.

Acupuncture Is A Better Choice

There are many causes for lower back pain and sciatica – including degenerative disks, osteoporosis, poor posture, weak abdominal and back muscles, and physical trauma.

We believe that acupuncture is an effective alternative to steroidal and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It should certainly be considered before choosing invasive surgery.

While there is no definitive therapy to resolve lower back pain and sciatica, our experience has been that patients who seek relief through our gentle, relaxing acupuncture treatments walk away feeling relieved of the pain from which they were previously suffering.

Studies Show Acupuncture Works for Back Pain

In a 2008 study conducted by the National Institute of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, the clinical efficacy of acupuncture treatments with patients suffering from acute and chronic lower back pain with sciatica was measured. All of the patients noted either a decrease in pain or complete absence of pain within six treatments of acupuncture. Furthermore, sciatic pain was reduced in 85 percent of the patients.

In 2007, the Center for Complementary Medicine Research based in  Munchen, Germany, filed a report on the efficacy of acupuncture in treating chronic back pain. Scientists discovered that acupuncture proved to be a treatment in high demand as an option for dealing with chronic pain conditions, and in fact, they recommended that acupuncture be covered under traditional health insurance policies due to its effectiveness.
